In 2016 the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will become the fourth city to host both the Summer Olympics opening ceremony and the FIFA football World Cup final. However, the first stadium to do so was Wembley Stadium in London, UK, which hosted the 1948 Summer Olympic Games and the 1966 World Cup Final. The Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy, was used for the 1960 Olympics and 1990 World Cup Final, while the Olympiastadion in Berlin was used for both the 1936 Olympics and the 2006 World Cup Final.
There have been other cities to have hosted both the Olympic Games and World Cup Final – such as Mexico City and Paris – but different stadia were used for the respective competitions. The Maracana is the first stadium to have hosted the World Cup Final and Olympics consecutively having hosted the 2014 World Cup Final.
