On 4 September 2017, media giant Star India (based in Mumbai, Maharashtra) paid £1.97 billion (Rs162.86 billion; $2.55 billion) for the global TV and digital rights to the Indian Premier League. The five-season deal (2018-22) values each of the tournament's 60 scheduled matches at £6.57 million (Rs543.15 million; $8.51 million).

The previous 10-season global rights deal was worth "just" £771.5 million (Rs63.78 billion; $999.6 million).

Star India is a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox.

Players who featured in the 2017 edition of the IPL (5 April to 21 May) included Virat Kohli (India; most expensive player at £1.77 million), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (India; leading wicket-taker with 26), Ben Stokes (England; most expensive overseas player at £1.7 million) and David Warner (Australia; leading run-scorer with 641).

The IPL was inaugurated in 2008. The Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise with three wins, in 2013, 2015 and 2017.
