The best selling videogame of the eighth console generation (Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Wii U) is Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar Games), which was released for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One on 18 Nov 2014. As of 5 November 2020, the game is estimated to have sold 28.1 million copies on these platforms (in addition to around 110 million copies on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC).

It’s a testament to just how big GTA V is that despite originally being released on the seventh-generation systems – the PS3 and Xbox 360 – it has continued to sell in such massive numbers that the PS4 and Xbox One versions have made it the best-selling title on the eight-generation of videogames consoles. The continued success of this title is largely down to its perennially popular GTA Online mode, which receives regular content updates and user-created levels.
