Ultramarathon swimmer Sarah Thomas (USA) completed a 168.3-km (104.6-mi) solo non-stop, unassisted swim in Lake Champlain, USA, on 7–9 August 2017. She departed from Rouses Point, New York, swimming south, circled Gardiner Island near Ferrisburgh, Vermont, and then returned to the starting point in 67 hours 16 minutes 12 seconds. The swim was verified by the Marathon Swimmers Federation.
The 35-year-old swimmer was piloted by Andrew Malinak, Craig Lenning and Cathy Delneo led by the vessel Loose Cannon.
Shortly after completing the record-breaking swim in Lake Champlain, Thomas was diagnosed with cancer and underwent a series of surgery and chemotherapy. However, she remained determined to push the boundaries of what was deemed possible in open-water swimming.
Two years later, on 15–17 September 2019, Thomas swam across the English Channel four times consecutively (the first person to do so), as ratified by the Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation. Her cumulative swim time was 54 hours 10 minutes. This epic journey was voted as the Marathon Swimmers Federation "Solo Swim of the Year" in 2019.
