Most penalties missed by one player in an international football game

Martín Palermo (Argentina) missed three penalties during his team's defeat by Colombia in the 1999 Copa América in Paraguay. His first shot hit the crossbar, the second landed in the stands and the third one was saved. He missed two more penalties in his domestic league right after this incident. He was valued at U$ 20 million before the tournament (he had been voted "player of the year" by South American sports journalists) but mysteriously all interested parties withdrew after the Copa América.
