The fastest ever relay cycle around Australia is 18 days 8 hr 39 min, by a team of eight cyclists in the High5 Round Australia Bike Ride 2001 between 22 October and 9 November 2001. The 14,314 km (8,894 mile) journey started and finished in Brisbane, Queensland, and in accordance with the rules, took in 19 coastal cities along the way. The eight riders were divided into two teams of four. Team A consisted of Mick Atkinson, Tim Atkinson, Brian Welsh and Tim Harper. Team B consisted of Bob Hallmark, Garrat McFadden, Clive Middleton and Paul Rogers. The ride continued non-stop for 24 hours a day, only interrupted three times for violent thunderstorms, during which the rider sheltered under the support camper van's canopy, still mounted on his bike.
