The farthest distance from which a volcanic eruption has been heard occurred on 27 Aug 1883 when the Krakatau volcano on the island of Rakata, Indonesia, erupted and was heard by people on Rodriguez Island  4,653 km 2,908 miles away. The people said it sounded like the distant roar of heavy guns and that it continued at intervals of 3 to 4 hours during the night. Krakatau erupted with the force of nearly 10,000 times that of the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima. It caused a tsunami wave 40 m 131 ft high, throwing a steamship 2.5 km 1.6 miles away.
