Pakistan (345 for 4) chased down Sri Lanka’s 344 for 9 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, India, on 10 October 2023 to maintain their winning start to the 13th edition of the 50-overs-per-side tournament. Sri Lanka’s imposing total was built around the blistering hundreds of Kusal Mendis (122) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (108), but it proved to be no match for Abdullah Shafique (113) and Muhammad Rizwan (131 not out), who guided Pakistan to their target with 10 balls to spare.
The match was the first in Cricket World Cup history to feature four centuries, and the combined total of 689 runs (in 98.2 overs) was the third-highest at the World Cup, just three days after South Africa (428 for 5) and Sri Lanka (326 all out) had posted a record 754 runs in 94.5 overs.
Ireland’s (329 for 7) pursuit of England’s 327 for 8 in Bengaluru, India, on 2 March 2011 was previously the highest successful World Cup run chase.
